Bona

Bona: Obsession and Madness
Reviewed by: Jhaque Bastian

The opening scene of the film begins with the footage of devoted people parading the statue of black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila. The camera captures a various people, who are craving and is going crazy to touch the black Nazarene. Some are tossing their towels and wiping it to the statue, people are hoping that the dark wooden Nazarene will make miracles in their lives. Brocka showed this kind of scene to illustrate how people intensely adore the Nazarene. The camera goes up and down and then pan across the crowd and zooms to a young woman named Bona who is at that time watching the parade go by.  What I can see in the movement of the camera is that, it shows superiority as it moves from high angle to low angle. Brocka brings up into our mind that there are times in our lives where in we stare for someone higher than us and we feel that we what to get in touch with them.

Bona (played by Nora Aunor) is a typical girl who adore Gardo, (Philip Salvador in a role) a young man who works as a freelancers. He tries everything from singing, dancing up to acting but all with only little success. Bona is a die-hearted fan of Gardo. The first part of the film shows how the young woman trades her household shores in serving Gardo, bringing him foods and drinks in all his taping. Her obsession to the guy came to a point that she even abandoned her family just to serve Gardo. In the morning she goes and fetches water, prepares breakfast and the unbelievable thing is bathing him up. There is an incident where in Gardo thought Bona is her mother because of the same care he received from them.

Bona devoted herself too much to a guy that is vain, drunkard, womanizer and an immature man. However, her devoutness to Gardo wasn’t that appreciated and unreturned. On the other hand, Gardo treats her as a sister no-more-no-less.  In spite of everything, Bona still loves to serve Gardo. I don’t know if Bona’s concerns to Gardo are just foolishness or she is just very obsess to the guy that she can’t leave him. There are two persons in the story who shows their sympathy to Bona, first is her mother and second is Nilo the guy who court her before. Nilo once said to her “ Bona, bakit? Bakit ka pumapayag na magpaganyan? Inaalila, pinapagod, ginugutom.” Bona replied ““Gusto ko eh. At hindi naman ako inaalila. Hindi naman ako napapagod.”
In  life we sometimes experience to became a martyr, doing something to other and expecting something from them, yet in the end we will realize that we are only devoting ourselves and sacrificing our time without anything in return.

JIL 33rd Anniversary: Great God, Great Outpouring

Behind the Lens!

Being one of the photographers in this event is such a great privilege for me.
On my way going to the venue (kabado mode pa ko nun J) I talked to God, “Lord, be the eyes of this camera. Kayo po ang syang mag-capture ng mga pangyayari. Fix the setting of the aperture, shutter speed and ISO.”
At first I’m thinking if I can do it, to capture the different emotions of people while worshiping.
I know in my heart that I’m not confident to take a photo in the anniversary for the reason that I’m nervous…! Hence, I entrusted to God the whole thing. As a result, all pictures are beautiful! The shots are nice the angles are perfect and the timing is good. The pictures truly explain everything about how people uttered their worshipped to God with gladness and joy.
It is an honor to present those entire pictures to God. I know someday pag nakita ng mga next generation ang mga pictures na yun, they will see how God has been merciful to His Children that he open the gates of heaven and pour out His blessings to them. Those pictures will be a living testimony that God moves mightily in their midst during the 33rd anniversary.

After the anniversary syempre di mawawala ang picture taking ^_^ it’s my time to have a photo pic. with my fellow KKB’s naman.

To God be the glory!

Peer to Peer Pressure!!

Peers influence your life, even if you don't realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It's only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group. Peer pressure is when "friends" persuade you to doing something that you do not want to do.

One of the major problems with peer pressure occurs when you get sucked into something that you really didn't want to do and subsequently, become addicted to it. Usually, people get backed into a situation to try illegal drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes and more times than not, these behaviors can become habit forming.
It is tough to be the only one who says "no" to peer pressure.  It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say "no," too. This takes a lot of the power out of peer pressure and makes it much easier to resist. It's great to have friends with values similar to yours who will back you up when you don't want to do something.

Even if you're faced with peer pressure while you're alone, there are still things you can do. You can simply stay away from peers who pressure you to do stuff you know is wrong. You can tell them "no" and walk away. Better yet, find other friends and classmates to pal around with.
Do your best to help yourself  get into peer groups with positive influences: those who get high grades, and friends who will encourage you to work hard.

MC INTENSIFIED!

We were all up early yesterday for our Masscom week. It was the opening day for IAS week and everyone participated in the different competition. MC Fair Intensified 2011 was an exciting event to all Mass Communication major. The flow of the events was smooth too.

Even though, I didn’t join any event during those days, I enjoying every part of the events. My Classmates and I were there to watch Mass Comm Idol, Quiz bee, Editorial Cartoon Making, Essay Writing, MC Best Dance Crew etc. Everything looked very organized from the parking grounds to the program proper. And whatever hitches there may have been (I'm sure there were some), more than anything, the audience were excited to see the energy of the participants as they showcase their talents such as singing and dancing. I can proudly say that Mass Communication students are very talented.

I truly appreciate the blessing of being able to be part of this institution. My classmates and I see how the school population has grown in our school and how student used to enroll their self as a proud mass communication major.

With a good and much improved building to run and a larger student population to manage, I'm confident that the administrators will do their best to make sure the academic standards are well maintained.

Celebrating Green and Gold’s 83rd of Existence

With the theme "A Green FEU for a Golden Tomorrow” Far Eastern University celebrates its 83rd Founding Anniversary. To celebrate this special day, the student is invited to attend the different activities that focus on saving the environment and the impact of technology. Being part of this big event, I and my friends contribute our time to donate blood as help to the needy. Aside from this, the students are also amazing, clever, and devoted on participating in the different contest and seminars held inside the campus. I also discovered an amazing group of talented, dedicated, and passionate teachers.
Far Eastern Universities foundation day leaves a remarkable experience to both students, staff and professors.

Finding The fun in Saving Money

Are you a reformed shopaholic? You don't have enough money?  But you cant stop shopping and you often rack up huge bills buying things that you can’t afford or you frequently buy things that you don’t need or use. Here's how to put your bad spending habits on the clearance rack. Always remember that sometimes the pleasure is only for a moment then there’s regret and guilt afterward, soon  you will lose interest in your purchases and sometimes you even forgetting what you’ve bought. I advice you to pause before purchasing, ask yourself a few key questions before plunking down the plastic: Do I need this? What if I wait? How will I pay for it? Where will I put it?. Keep a log of what you bought, how much it cost and how you felt before, during and afterward.

Another one, if your a kind of shopaholic who find shopping as your solution to a lousy day at work or you often often look at shopping as an escape from being depressed, angry, lonely, upset or even bored. One of the solution i can give you is to  find healthier (and cheaper!) ways to cheer up. Talk to someone who makes you laugh, take a walk or relax in a bubble bath.  And if you used credit cards in paying your bills always remember how to limit yourself in using it. We see huge amounts of credit card debt and a lot of this can lead to bankruptcy and, for some people, destroyed lives. Don't forget that debt is one of the most serious consequences of compulsive shopping.

Shopping can be fun and we all have to shop for one thing or another from time to time.
Learning to shop and spend smart is key to your recovery of overcoming addiction to shopping and  you can even save a money.

A TREASURE OF MINE

One of the most things that I valued so much is my Bible. Because whenever I’m lonely I will just open it and the Lord will give me a verse that is suitable to my needs. I always bring my Bible with me wherever I go for i know anytime I seek Him the message of His word will be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

I love hearing a message coming from God because it inspires me to live in life. I value this thing so much because it is the word of truth, it gives me advice on how to live in a meaningful life, it reveals Christ on me, it is also the key to true freedom and liberty and last it is the true food for man’s soul.

Aside from Bible,I also love my antique necklace that was given to me by my father. I used this once during the day of my debut only. This item was passed down from generation to generation and I valued it so much. It is a cross surrounded by little diamonds. It’s my grandmother’s necklace and she gave it to my father. When I reached eighteen my father turn over to me this very nice and fancy necklace, one of his statement when he place it in my hands  was to handle it with care and when I already have my own family and children then it's the time for me to hand it over to my first daughter when she reach the age of eighteen. I value this thing so much because it has the memory of my ancestor who had it first. Having this item is a great favor for me because it is I who was given the privilege and the trust to keep it until I forward it to the next generation of our family.

I want to pass to my children these two things that I treasured most because I believe that the even though I’m far from them the Bible will be their guide and path. And the necklace that was passed to me by my father is our families treasure, it contains the everlasting love of our grandmother and grandfather to us. This cross symbolize that even though they already passed away the Lord will always be with us and we know that the time they reached the heaven they whisper to God to continue to guide us and direct us in life.
